Monique's Breast Cancer Journey

Spotlight:  Monique

In 2017 at the age of 46 my breasts were leaking even though my son was 6yrs old. I mentioned this to my internist who referred me for a mammogram. April 2017, changed my life. I rarely share the exact date of my diagnosis because it's a close friend's birthday. On this day I was diagnosed with DCIS in my right breast nipple. To say I was shocked is an understatement. In June 2017 I had surgery to remove the cancerous tissue from my right breast. Both breasts were reconstructed. Tissue from my left breast was sent for further testing. Unfortunately cancer was found in my left breast also.

What is now the plan of action? The fact is I am mother of a non-verbal autistic son. After much contemplation and strong medical recommendation I decided to have a bilateral mastectomy. September 15, 2017, I had a bilateral mastectomy. I thought this surgery would be simple with the result being perky breast implants... This was not the case. I did not heal properly therefore the implants were removed. I endured hyperbaric and wound treatment for a month. For the rest of my life, I have to wear a breast prostheses. Lavender Wisp has made this possible.  I am five years cancer free. Many days I miss my 42DD breasts but I'm thankful the cancer wasn't worse or has not reoccurring.

This is my story of being a "Thriver".
